Feathers and Flutes – Part 1

575

Raga Bhopali is a pentatonic scale – it uses 5 notes in ascending and descending scale. This raga is normally played in the first part of night. It has become my sunset song where I reflect and give thanks for the day that is ending.

An Indian raga or raag is a melodic framework for improvisation akin to a melodic mode in Indian classical music. This Sanskrit word can literally be translated as meaning “to colour the mind”. There are many different ragas, each suited to a time of day or a season and time of year.

This is not a performance of Bhupali, but simply a small part of my evening practice using the Bhupali scale. The notes are important, but the scale alone does not make a raga. Using Indian Classical notations, the five notes are Sa Re Ga Pa Dha.

I am playing an F flute. In other words, Sa is tuned to F and is typically the first note I play in the scale. The note F and the colour green resonate with the heart chakra.

FYI – I like to bring the outdoors, indoors so to say – a mic has been placed under the fruit trees close by – the live sounds I normally hear have therefore been enhanced)

This week I am celebrating the past 3 years which has brought much magic, mystery and change to my life, as well as a passion for feathers and flutes.

For the next few days starting this evening, I’ll be sharing a small part of my daily practice via some live video feeds – a short recording of how I start and end most of my days with my practice and sādhana – “this is where I am”

Evening times I have selected are today (Wednesday) and Thursday, just after 6pm and on Friday morning I’ll be on around 6am, just after sunrise. Videos will be 10 – 15 minutes and they will be saved and posted in case anybody else would like to follow at a different time.
Please like, share or comment – in which case I’ll reply in text after the video is complete.

Much love and many thanks for a celebration of feathers and flutes ❤️
