The Old Post Office

The Old Post Office is a place where history and creativity meet – a quiet convergence of past and present in the Breede Valley.

First established around 1858, and later relocated to its current site on Goudini Road in 1948, the building formed part of the region’s early communication and transport network. For generations, it served as a connective thread within the local community, witnessing the evolution of postal services and the railway in South Africa.

Following the closure of this branch of the post office in the early 2010s, and its permanent shutdown in 2023, the building entered a new chapter. Today, it is being carefully reimagined as a creative space, housing an art gallery and mosaic workshop, while retaining the character and stories embedded in its walls.

The Old Post Office is both a preservation project and a working creative environment. Visitors are welcomed by appointment to explore the space, engage with the work being created there, and experience how heritage can be carried forward through craft and thoughtful reuse.

The Old Post Office is also open most Saturday mornings between 09:00 and 12:00 for informal market sales, including fresh free-range eggs, trees and plants, fresh local goods, and a selection of designer products.
